Why is There a Devil… Just a Fictional Character…

Posted by apwood on April 16, 2009

So.. although I would consider myself a very spiritual person… I’ve never been religious.

I was baptized in two different christian religions and made to attend church as a child – which was good.  I learned the bible teachings, different religious philosophies, and the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ aspects of religion. (which is a whole other post)

In a nutshell, I think religion can be a ‘good’ thing offering people peace, fellowship, and purpose.  But, for me, the ‘bad’ fear-based teachings that you must be ‘a good person’ or you will find yourself face to face with the DEVIL when you die was always a problem for me.

Even as a young child it seemed backwards to teach love and acceptance for fear of hell.  Just never resonated with me.

So I chose as an adult to read about other religions and find what spirituality meant to me without participating in religion.  I found that unconditional love, acceptance, and non-judgment were the basics that made the most sense.  They feel good and right to me.

For me, I do believe that I have an obligation (mostly to myself and my evolvement) to strive to be a ‘good’ person.

Honesty, loyalty, unconditional acceptance, love, kindness, and giving are all words that I would hope one day would be words that those who knew me would use to describe who I was.

All of this I feel is important because of who I want to be not what I fear will happen to me if I do not.

I do not believe there is a separate entity named the ‘Devil’  although i do think the pain we may cause ourselves and others through unkind acts could be dark and painful, which could describe the despair we may feel.

I receive a daily email from Abraham-Hicks Publications.  They are excerpts from their teachings.  I was moved to share this as it seemed to sum up my underlying disbelief in a devil.

The “devil” is a fictional character made up (and perpetuated) by insecure humans who want to control other insecure humans. There’s a lot of power in fear, isn’t there? There shouldn’t be, because, really, what fear is, is power-less. If you understood Source, as we do, you would never fashion such fiction because there is only Well-Being that flows from that which is your Source.

Excerpted from the workshop in North Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, March 6th, 2004

Our Love,
Jerry and Esther

I found this very powerful.

I also was moved to look at fear as something that i do to myself to take my own power away.

Wow…. it takes one sentence to change a perspective.  It can be said a hundred different ways but maybe only one really makes it clear.  Writing is a beautiful thing.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

Why SHOULD You Vote for Angel in the Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest?

Posted by apwood on January 30, 2009

Because it is for a great cause!

Hi! My pet has something to ask you: Will you vote for her in the Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest – and help save other pets’ lives at the same time?

See my pet’s picture and message below. Helping animals is really important to me, and your donation will not only help my pet in the contest, but will save pets’ lives by reducing pet overpopulation. Thanks!

Angel Marie Butler

Hi!

I’m Angel Marie Butler. The person who takes care of me, Amy, has entered me in The Humane Society of the United States’ and Humane Society International’s Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest.

Now I need your vote to help me win some cool prizes — and to help me raise critical funds for spaying and neutering to control pet overpopulation. Go here to vote for me by making a small donation to my sponsored charity!

To celebrate the 15th annual Spay Day on February 24, 2009, The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International are telling everyone how spaying and neutering improves pets’ lives. In addition to making pets better, more affectionate companions, spaying and neutering helps animals live longer and healthier.

To enter the photo contest, my caregiver submitted this picture and wrote a few nice words about me. The rest is up to you: This is one contest in which you can “buy” votes — and that’s exactly what I’m asking you to do. In this contest, every US $1 you donate in my name both supports spay/neuter and awards me one vote in the contest! If I finish in the top 500, I’ll win some sweet prizes.

I’d appreciate your vote and donation today, but if you’d like to enter your own pet in the contest, then please do—I can handle some friendly competition! And if you want to stay on top of how I am doing in the contest, visit the Search Pets page and search for me by name.

You can now also find me on Facebook! You can share my entry with your family and friends — on Facebook.

Enter your pet in the contest and donate to vote today. You may enter the contest until 5 p.m., Eastern Time, on February 27, 2009; voting ends at midnight, Eastern Time, on March 6, 2009.

Sincerely,
Angel Marie Butler

Why Did My Recycling Get Bigger & My Trash got Smaller?

Posted by apwood on October 13, 2008

Because I found out how to do it! Sounds silly but I did not get the “Recycle Instructions” when I moved into my current home.  The only thing I knew was that you threw the metal cans and glass bottles in the green recycle bin.  I also saw some people putting out boxes (that were broken down) so when I ordered something that came in a box, I did the same.

When my daughter’s school did a recycling drive (where you could bring in catalogs and magazines to recycle) I got to thinking that there had to be so much more I could be doing.

Then I saw on TV that one Pizza chain in NY City recycles their pizza boxes.

I began to try and find more about recycling online. I didn’t have much look searching so I called my local borough.  The lady was very kind and offered to send me out the instructions.  Which she did.

I’ve now cut my trash in 1/2 and doubled my recycling!

How? Well, All of the paper I was throwing in my trash can (i.e. – junk mail, shredded bills, magazines, paper etc) all goes in a brown paper bag next to my recycling bin.

I also took the box thing a step further by breaking down every box (i.e. – cereal, cracker, popcorn) and I mean every box!  Then I tie them up and place them next to my recycling bin.

It is amazing how much of a difference it makes!  It may take a few extra seconds to break the box down, and a few extra minutes on the day of pick up to tie up the boxes, but knowing that I’m doing my part to help preserve our beautiful Earth makes it so worth it to me.

I was also happy to see that my local grocery store now has boxes for you to recycle plastic bags and batteries!

If you live in Chester County Pennslyvania, here is a link to the Solid Waste Authority. You can drop off computers, cell phones, and motor oil and such.

It has become something I think about now and I look forward to when everything is recycled.

Why should we keep dumping plastic bags full of things that we don’t recycle to sit in holes in the Earth?

There is more on the NO side of the recycling instructions then the YES.  Why can’t we recycle napkins, milk cartons, juice boxes, pet food bags, photographs, plastic envelopes, light bulbs and so on?

I hope it becomes a priority and one day sooner than later all we get is really big recycling bins and no more trash cans!

Why Help Protect Our Children from Pedophiles before September 26, 2008?

Posted by apwood on September 16, 2008

Because your voice matters and it could save a child from being abused.

For those of you who don’t watch Oprah, her show yesterday was mind blowing.  I’m still nauseous and shocked.  I, as you probably do too, know that there are pedophiles preying on children.  I didn’t know how wide spread it was – probably because it isn’t talked about much.

Oprah prefaced the show by saying “What you are going to see is going to shock you to the core, but I’m asking you to please don’t turn away,” Oprah says, “because this is happening in our country to our children in the United States every day.”

Look at this picture of Oprah standing in front of a map where each red dot signifies a pedophile who is online viewing and committing crimes:

The map behind Oprah shows how quickly one pornographic image of a child being molested can spread. It starts with the large red dot from a computer in Washington, D.C. Within 24 hours, it has spread all across the United States—from coast to coast and north to south. “This is just an average day in America—24 hours,” Oprah says.

Now if this wasn’t bothersome enough to see how wide spread just the internet pedophiles are (keeping in mind that there are still plenty of people out there who don’t embrace technology) then the viewers heard “We’re seeing sexual abuse including oral penetration, vaginal, anal penetration,” says Michelle, another analyst. “We see children with dog collars on their necks. Kids with plastic bags over their heads. Foreign object insertion with these children.”

And they are filming this and sharing it with there network of sickos via the internet.

We also heard that these assaults are happening to younger and younger children because they can’t tell.

I couldn’t believe my ears but Yes – they are doing this to babies!

Still seared in my head from the show – they said that on videos you heard a baby giggle and gurgling and then it turns to a screaming cry because they are being hurt – I couldn’t hold back the tears.

I am appalled that in this day and age of technology that these filthy predators are able to commit these heinous crimes with technology but we are not stopping them?  Why?

I learned that –

The Internet can sometimes seem like the Wild West for child predators—a place that largely operates outside the law. While trading in pedophile pornography is illegal, lack of adequate funding means law enforcement officials are able to investigate just 2 percent of their leads. And, according to Interpol statistics, only one-half of 1 percent are ever prosecuted.

It is so angering that the US spends money on so many useless things and lack of money is why these scum can still hurt innocent children.

So what can we do to help these children and change this?

Help Pass Senate Bill 1738—The PROTECT Our Children Act
Oprah

Hundreds of thousands of children are victims of sexual abuse each year. Due to the sheer lack of resources, law enforcement is unable to follow up on the majority of leads they have.

The PROTECT Our Children Act will:

  • Authorize over $320 million over the next five years in desperately needed funding for law enforcement to investigate child exploitation.
  • Mandate that child rescue be a top priority for law enforcement receiving federal funding.
  • Allocate funds for high-tech computer software that can track down Internet predators.

Act Now!
Your U.S. senators will be voting on the bill soon, so it is crucial you contact them immediately.
Go to www.senate.gov to find contact information for the senators in your state. Search for your senator by name or state by clicking on the arrow from either dropdown menu. Contact information is provided here. To send an e-mail, click on “Web Form” below his or her name, and e-mail your letter to make a difference!

Call Your Senators
If you choose to contact your senators by phone, be sure to tell them, “Vote yes on Senate Bill 1738—The PROTECT Our Children Act.”

Write to Your Senators
If you choose to write a letter, fax, telegram or e-mail, you may use the following sample letter—and modify it how you see fit.

Dear Senator:

I know that you believe, like I do, that we must do everything possible to protect children from sexual predators. That is why I am asking for your help.

Last year alone, U.S. law enforcement identified over 300,000 criminals who were trafficking in movies and pictures of young children being raped and tortured. Experts say that one in every three of these criminals has local child victims. Child pornography trafficking over the Internet has given us a trail of evidence that leads straight to their doorsteps, but the vast majority of these children will never be rescued because investigators are overwhelmed, outnumbered and underfunded.

As your constituent, I urge you to do everything in your power to pass the PROTECT Our Children Act (S. 1738, Biden-Hatch). This bipartisan legislation passed the House 415-2, but it is now the victim of petty partisan politics.

Now that we know where these children are and how to protect them, there is no excuse for the Senate to fail to take action this session.

(Your name here)

Instructions for How to Copy and Paste the Letter
To copy and paste the letter into your senator’s web form at www.senate.gov, point your mouse arrow at the beginning of the text that you want to copy. Click your left mouse button and hold it down. While holding the left mouse button, drag your arrow to the end of the text that you want to copy. Release the button. The text should be highlighted. Place your mouse arrow over the highlighted text, click your right mouse button once and let go. A new menu should appear. Select Copy from the drop down menu. When you get to the message form field for your senator at www.senate.gov, point your arrow at the beginning of the message field that you want to copy your text to and right click with your mouse. Click Paste from this menu. Submit your form and help our children!

I already sent my letter to Senator Casey & Specter.  It only took 5 minutes.

Please do this little part for children!  It will only take you a few minutes – that are priceless in helping protect the future of our children.

Then send it on to everyone you know!

Why Drive in The Right, Pass in the Left Lane?

Posted by apwood on September 12, 2008

For one – it would make so many people happy.  At least me.

Why do I care?  Almost daily I see someone going right at or below the speed limit in the left lane.  It starts to back traffic up and you have to take off cruise control.  (No, I’m not a road rager (is that a word?) who drives 90 mph, just your normal 7-miles-or-so-over-the-speed-limit-girl)

Also, my other half is an offender of left-lane-driving-slower-than-the-cars-in-the-right-lane.  He is one of the many who do this. I try to bite my tongue when someone is on his ass and I just know they’re irritated.  If he doesn’t notice after a minute or so i just can’t help it.

I don’t understand why nor do i understand why I don’t and why it bugs me?  I just feel like it is the right thing to do as a driver.

But anyway, curiosity pushed me to look up what the ‘law’ on such annoying behavior is.  It must have come from somewhere.  Didn’t I learn that in Driver’s Ed in high school?  Stay to the right unless passing?  It has been a while so I did some searching.

First I found a site called “STATE KEEP RIGHT LAWS” – it actually breaks down the laws each state.  Yeah, LAWS as in plural.  It is ridiculous some say YES you have to keep right, others say NO, others say sometimes depending.  Take a look at the chart – beware, it can be confusing – you have to keep looking up to remember which color means which answer and then the side notes.  (or maybe it is just early for me).

So, the verdict on Pennsylvania (since that is where i live and drive most often) – “USUALLY”.  Huh?  Not Yes (although marked green for yes = driver can only use left lane to pass)  Usually was given b/c it is a YES with 2 reasons for not following this:

May also use left lane to allow traffic to merge or “when traveling at a speed greater than the traffic flow”.

I get it they are being very specific – which some may need and not leaving it to common sense.  Very smart PA lawmakers that be.

But  there are only seven states that say Yes to drive in the right lane unless passing.

The abundance of them say ‘Slower’ on the chart which means –

Most states follow the Uniform Vehicle Code and require drivers to keep right if they are going slower than the normal speed of traffic (regardless of the speed limit). These are listed as “slower”, with an asterisk and an explanation under “comments” if vehicles lawfully using the left lane must yield to overtaking traffic. A few states either do not require vehicles to keep right (“no”), or permit vehicles moving at the speed limit to drive in the left lane regardless of traffic conditions .

Which I interpret as if you are holding up traffic because you are going slower than the people in the right lane or behind you move over.

Only a few states don’t say you have to get over.

So I wasn’t crazy – Stay in the right lane unless you are passing or going faster than the right lane.

I even found a site called DRIVE RIGHT PASS LEFT – where they also hold the belief that this system has a place and will help with congestion on the highways.  I didn’t scour it as closely as the first as I’m out of time.  Woke up a little early this morning and had a minute.

Am I the only one who wishes this was a law that more abide by?

Although – this was kind of just a fun thing to look up for curiosity sake on what the laws were.

Have a good one!

Why Is Drugging Children Legal?

Posted by apwood on June 19, 2008

This video is eye opening!

In the last few years, I’ve become aware of the over medication in general in this country with antibiotics and vaccines. Having worked with children with Autism and other childhood disorders, I also saw first hand the large amount of medications used to control’ their behaviors.

But this was new to me that abused and neglected children are NOT given the help that they need, but some drugs to numb them.

Weird. If they went out and used illegal drugs to numb themselves they would be arrested and incarcerated, BUT if the pharmaceutical companies do this to them – it is in their best interests.

Big pharma seems to have no end. Money and Greed are ruining our children’s future.

I found this video on my Dr. Mercola newsletter today – and had to share. I found the ‘previous pharmaceutical rep’ speaking at the end of the video to be so enlightening. She clearly states that the pharmaceutical companies motivation is money.

There are so many people working FOR children to help them, so how do we stop money and greed from destroying these efforts?

Why I SEE things Differently.

Posted by apwood on April 27, 2008

The 8th Oprah & Eckhart class talked about INNER SPACE.

I especially found it helpful because Eckhart answered a lot of questions from people (including myself) who had a hard time with “being” one with now and what is, and “doing.” Just as I did, a lot of people were seeing this “peace” only when being still.

One guy asked how we make money and pay our bills and still be.

Eckhart explained that being is not just sitting there being with it, but having it behind all that you do.

He also spoke to the fact that is it more difficult to remain a conscious observer when faced with adversity, anger, or anything unsettling. But that if you can remain conscious that you are angry, you are not lost or taken over by anger.

That it is a practice, which takes time, and eventually you become more aware and don’t have to “catch” yourself because you are most always coming or operating from presence.

It really did help. Something that Oprah said to one caller was that if you look at things from your conscious without labeling that the world really does transform. I felt what she was saying as this has been my experience over the last 8 weeks during the classes.

As I’m sure a lot of Mother’s agree, household and necessary tasks can be boring, and repetitive. During these times – driving to the grocery store, dry cleaners, or wherever I’ve tried to use the tools Eckhart has spoken about – deep breaths, feeling my inner body, looking at things without labeling them etc.

Wow, what a difference it makes!

I’ve noticed things that I’ve looked at for years and never really “saw” them before.

Like dandelions. Instead of seeing them as a weed, they looked so yellow and beautiful and they reminded me of all the times my daughter picked them for me as a little girl. Even the ones she shoved in her pocket at school to give me later!

The tree across the street that is missing a side branch and always looked deformed to me before – now looks unique and strong and beautiful because it isn’t perfect.

Our dog Angel – who wanted to go out and walk or sit in the sun during the day when I was busy (which previously at times seemed like a chore)- now allows me to take 20 minutes to enjoy the beauty outside.

This may be second nature to some – but to me – it’s all new.

What a gift to view the beauty of the world new each day.

I am so grateful.

Why Will You Thank Yourself for Watching Eckhart & Oprah’s 5th & 6th Online Class?

Posted by apwood on April 13, 2008

Because the emotional baggage that you have acquired – which weighs you down, reacts to anything negative said or done to you, and keeps seeking more pain – will begin to go away.

Eckhart calls this emotional baggage the “Pain-Body.” He describes it as an entity consisting of all the negativity that we’ve held onto. It eventually keeps collecting and feeding off of more and more pain becoming so large in some that the pain-body can be ‘active’ in you most of the time.

Which would describe me for a better part of my life.

Are you or have you been angry, resentful, felt that what you were dealt in life was so unfair? I have. Even the things that happened to you as a child. I mean we couldn’t help what was ‘done’ to us – and it is natural (at least it has been to me) to hold onto those things.

But in the short 2 weeks that I have been aware’ of my pain-body and tried not to be drawn in by it – my actions and reactions have changed dramatically. I don’t get angry multiple times a day!

From inconsiderate drivers, rude customer service reps, to my daughter talking back. When I don’t take what is being said or done as an affront to me (in other words, I don’t experience it through my pain-body) – it doesn’t hurt me and I don’t react. And wow – what energy it saves!

What resonated with me a lot was when Eckhart began speaking about the fact that the pain-body comes out or shows itself the most in intimate relationships. The Pain-Body also tries to feed itself (remember it has to be fed to continue its existence) from pushing the buttons of the one you love. So I suppose simulataneous feeding would be our fights….

This would be why there is that phenomenon that you don’t “really know someone” until you’ve lived with them, this is when you are introduced to their pain-body.

During Class 5 – Eckhart explained that the pain-body” is the emotional manifestation of the “ego.” And that just the thought that it (the painbody) is not who we are gives us the freedom to let it go.

I’m amazed at how simplistic this all seems, including the answers to stopping the cycle. Eckhart said, “awareness dissolve it.” So just as was talked about with the ego, just being aware is enough to separate yourself from it (the pain-body.)

He says in Chapter Six in A New Earth -pg. 161 – “It is your conscious prescence that breaks identification with the pain-body. When you no longer identify with it, the pain-body can no longer control your thinking and so cannot renew itself anymore by feeding on your thoughts. The pain-body does not dissolve immediately, but once you have severed the link between it and your thinking, the bain-body begins to lose energy.”

Eckhart explained that you should feel your pain when it comes up. Accept it.

This was not a natural thing and pretty difficult for me. Who likes to feel their pain? But strangely enough – he’s right. When I was feeling pain these past two weeks, I layed back and surrendered to it. It was almost like jumping off a cliff and trusting the first couple times.

But I have to say when i let go and sat in the pain without one ounce of resistance or hesitation -= it lessened! It is kind of like the pain goes to the background instead of being so close. I was suprised because I have always resisted it with such force. I don’t want to hurt so bad that I would fight it relentlessly. And it has always caused me more pain.

When Eckhart first said to do this – I thought why would i want to feel it. He explained that the reason why you should accept it is because it is part of becoming friendly with the present moment. (AS he discussed previously and I talked a little about in another post.)

Finally, he touched on how important it is to NOT seek external substances when in pain. This is not a rare phenomenon for me or many many people. This is evident through the widespread abuse of drugs and alcohol – which prolongs the problem.

Eckhart admits he likes a glass of wine – don’t we all – but overdoing it is the problem. Medicating the emotion dulls it temporarily but it is still there. For those like myself who have tried these methods and realized their failure to fix us – finally an answer.

Seemed strange for me to go into that pain – but I gotta say – it really works.

Lastly, Eckharts advice to help on stopping yourself from acting through the pain-body. When you are conscious and in the present – it is easier to see the pain-body creeping up – so you don’t have to be taken over by it. When you do feel it creeping up, stop and try and step back from it while it is still an emotion.

Eckhart said something like, “Suffering is not the pain-body but the identification with it when you become it or it becomes you.

As has been the case each week, I’m so happy to have the classes to reinforce the book. I feel like I’ve finally found the tools to really change how I am and enjoy my life like I’ve always wanted to.

Many thanks to Eckhart & Oprah!
